Catch #2

We caught our second flying squirrel in the attic last night. Fun facts: they are one of 2 nocturnal squirrel species, they make good pets (????), they have good honing instincts (releasing this one much farther away), and they nest in groups of up to 20 in the winter. Time to invest in more traps!

Animal relocation - Virginia chapter

Look who we caught in our attic last night. A little flying squirrel! Instead of keeping him for an upstairs pet, we will relocate him to a lovely beach later today. Guess we have a "seal up the attic" pro

Decorating for Halloween

We put up some Halloween decorations this weekend. Leila and her friend Anna made this guy who now sits in our front yard, watching the world go by.

Violin group class

We had our first violin group classes over the weekend. Kids both had fun!

Running on the Mall

One of my favorite DC activities! Even the kids liked it, although the slushy payoff didn't hurt!

Leila and Erica Mile Run

We participated in our neighborhood's Labor Day games on Monday. The first event was a 1 mile run. Leila very reluctantly ran it with me. She did great!

Turns out we not only look alike, but we even have the same running form. Twinsies!

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Leila seemed unimpressed by the White House but I made her take a picture next to the street sign anyway.

Playing tourist

We met our friends in DC yesterday and went to the National Book Festival. We spent a few hours listening to authors, browsing the displays, and then headed to the Portrait Gallery for some coffee and to see the Michelle Obama painting. The girls were clearly into their own things.

Unpacking

Opening boxes to find one labeled 'world.' Indeed, I did find the world inside!

First day of School: Mission Accomplished

Kindergarten drop off

Double win for the first morning of kindergarten: Athena walked all the way to school without complaining (kind of a big deal for this kid who hates to walk even a block), and no tears dropping her off. Her teacher is Mrs Volpe.

First day of school!

First day of kindergarten and middle school!

Last day of summer vacation

Spent the day doing hours of yard work, playing at the beach, and enjoying dinner on our porch. Tomorrow? First days of kindergarten and middle school. Hooray!!!!
